Wildfire devastation by creating

DEFENSIBLE SPACE

around your homes, cabins and out buildings

It is important to understand how defensible space protects your property.

  1. Defensible space can reduce and slow the spread of wild fires as they approach your property.
  2. Defensible space protects the wildland fire fighters by lessening the severity of the fire near structures and allowing the firefighters to get closer to your home, cabin and out buildings without putting themselves in greater danger.

—CAUTION—
In the event of a wild fire near or around your property, if you do NOT have adequate defensible space around your home, cabin and out buildings, you may not get fire crews on your property helping to mitigate the fires.

Fire Crew leaders will arrive and access the risk to the fire crews prior to directing crews onto your property. If your defensible space is NOT adequate to protect the fire crews, and the fires are just too hot and dangerous, they will not endanger the crews any more than is necessary and your place may burn down.

Create
Defensible Space

Defensible space is an area around your home where vegetation is cleared or reduced to slow the spread of wildfire towards the structure. It also reduces the chance of a structure fire moving from the building to the surrounding area.Defensible space provides a safety zone for firefighters to do their job. Your home is more likely to withstand a wildfire if grasses, brush, trees, and other forest fuels are managed to reduce a fire’s intensity.

Practice Firewise Landscaping

Firewise landscaping is the practice of designing, installing, and maintaining a landscape to minimize fire hazard to structures, residents, and neighbors, while maintaining components of native ecosystems.

Such landscaping uses appropriate plants, placed and maintained so that fuel loads decrease in zones between an area to be protected, e.g., a home, and the surrounding Wildland.

The use of firewise plants alone does not guarantee fire safety for your home, but firewise plants coupled with good design and maintenance help establish a defensible space around your home and neighborhood that assists firefighters in their protection efforts.

Native vegetation around homes and neighborhoods can be managed in a firewise manner through pruning, thinning, and occasional clearing.
