In the summer of 2002 the Fruitland, Utah volunteer fire department held the first of what would become an annual Fire Fair.
The purpose was to teach the community about the dangers of Wildland Fires and how to lessen their potential impact on homes and property.
The concept of “Defensible Space” around homes and out buildings was the main topic of discussion and has been throughout the years.
Because the two large HOA’s (Home Owners Associations) Bandanna Ranch and Camelot hold their annual meetings on the Saturday morning of the Memorial Weekend, the Fire Fair was set for the same date so that all of the home and property owners could come and learn about protecting their property.
Eight years later in 2010 the Fruitland Community was recognized by Firewise.org a subsidiary of the U.S. Federal National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) as a Firewise Community which makes the community and State fire agencies eligible for grants for fire protection, suppression and equipment from the Federal Government.
To remain a Firewise Community, the community must do a few things including holding a public event to teach and train the public regarding wild land fire prevention.
